A classic with a righteous growl
This tastefully restomodded two-door Range Rover Classic is a master class in an incredibly comprehensive and detailed restoration taking thousands of man-hours to complete. At the heart of this project lies a transplanted General Motors 430hp LS3 6.2L V8 mated to a 4L85e automatic gearbox – that’s a big step up to a modern powerhouse, giving it growl on pavement and grunt off road.
The Range Rover was upgraded throughout, including the drivetrain to effectively put the newfound power down on the ground; front and rear shafts, CV joints, stub axles, and flanges are all upgraded in high-grade steel. Differentials have been swapped out to automatic torque biasing limited slip centers, including pegging and HD R&P. The LT230 transfer case has been rebuilt with heavy duty cross pin and sleeved casing upgrade.
Functionally and faithfully beautiful
The overall design guidance from the client for this build was to maintain the original stock look of the car as much as possible – a sleeper truck with some sharp, and deliberate tweaks. The paint job stays faithful to the original Land Rover shades of green, but with a slight tweak to provide a richer, metallic hue to make for a head-turning look. Wheels are original restored five-spoke Range Rover alloys, supported by heavy duty coils giving the car a slight lift while accommodating the heavily upgraded drive train.
The interior was remade by hand in saddle colored leatherette with black edge piping for front seats, rear bench, door cards, as well as kick panels and sidewall surfaces. The floor trimmed in black fiber carpet with the center console, cubby box and sifter boot dressed in black leatherette. The original Blaupunkt radio was maintained in the center radio tray while a modern Sony Bluetooth media receiver was discretely placed out of sight to provide a modern sound experience with four speakers.
The project also incorporates client-specific requests to enable a surfing-oriented California lifestyle: a key lockbox with coded lock welded to the frame out of sight to hide car keys while at the beach surfing, and a yellow-painted tow hook and a battery kill switch to isolate the battery both for longer term storage and as extra theft deterrence.
