At Legacy Overland, we had the opportunity to work on a rare 1991 Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon Pick-Up. Our primary objective for this project was to ensure the mechanical reliability of the iconic OM602 turbo diesel engine while preserving the vehicle's original patina. This wasn’t a full frame-off restoration; instead, we focused on making it an extremely durable and mechanically sound classic, ready for both on-road and off-road adventures.

Comprehensive Maintenance and Fluid Services

To ensure the long-term health and reliability of this G-Wagon Pick-Up, we performed a full vehicle diagnosis, followed by a comprehensive fluid service. This included replacing the fluids for the engine, transfer case, gearbox, and cooling system, and installing new engine oil and fuel filters. These essential services not only extend the life of the OM602 Turbo Diesel engine but also ensure it runs smoothly and efficiently, whether on-road or off.

A key component of the restoration was the removal and replacement of the engine's head gasket. After disassembling the cylinder head, we cleaned and balanced it to factory-spec tolerances. We also replaced the cylinder head bolts to ensure proper torque and long-lasting reliability. To further enhance performance, we upgraded the turbo system by installing a new turbo oil return drain line kit and replacing the oil drain joint. These updates are essential for maintaining engine integrity, especially under the higher demands of turbocharged performance.

Our restoration approach for this G-Wagon balanced mechanical upgrades with respect for its original character. By preserving the patina, we honored the vehicle’s rugged history while updating its mechanical systems to handle modern demands.
