Comprehensive Engine Overhaul
At Legacy Overland, we took on the challenge of upgrading a 1994 Land Rover Defender 110. One of the most significant aspects of this project was addressing the compromised original engine. Recognizing that a repair wouldn't suffice, we opted for a full engine swap. We carefully removed the old engine and all related components, ensuring a clean slate for the new installation. The new engine, another 300TDI, was chosen for its perfect compatibility and reliability, ensuring the Defender's performance is restored to its full potential.
Comfort and Interior Upgrades
To enhance comfort, we completely disassembled the dashboard, removing all the old components to make way for a modern A/C system. The upgrade wasn’t just about adding a cooling unit; it involved a comprehensive rewiring job to integrate the new system seamlessly with the existing electronics. While we were at it, we also tackled several electrical gremlins that had plagued the heating system, ensuring that both heating and cooling functions were working perfectly. We also replaced the Bosch diesel pump, ensuring smooth and efficient power delivery.
Transmission and Pedal Adjustments
This Defender had undergone a manual-to-automatic transmission swap during a previous restoration, which left a hole where the clutch pedal once was and an oversized brake pedal that didn’t fit the vehicle's aesthetic or functionality. To address this, we started by plugging the hole from the removed clutch pedal, ensuring that the repair was not only secure but also visually seamless. We then removed all the old hardware and adhesive, which had been left behind during the earlier swap. After thoroughly cleaning the area, we reinstalled a properly sized brake pedal, restoring the interior to its correct configuration and improving the driving experience.
Rear Seating and Upholstery
One of the unique challenges of this project was the absence of rear jump seats, which are an important feature for a Defender designed for both utility and passenger transport. Our skilled upholsterers were tasked with creating these seats from scratch. To ensure a perfect match, they meticulously sourced fabric that was identical to the material used in the existing seats. The craftsmanship didn’t stop at matching the material; our team paid close attention to stitching patterns, padding, and overall construction, resulting in rear jump seats that look like they were always part of the vehicle. This careful attention to detail ensured that the new seats integrated flawlessly with the Defender’s interior.
Off-Road Features and Brake Overhaul
Given the Defender 110’s off-road heritage, we wanted to equip this vehicle with the necessary gear to tackle any adventure. We installed a Front Runner Expedition full rail roof rack, providing ample storage for gear and supplies. To complement the rack, we added a Front Runner rear 2-piece ladder, making it easy to access the roof. A swing-away spare wheel carrier was also installed, paired with a Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac tire mounted on a saw cut alloy wheel, ensuring that the spare is as durable and ready as the rest of the vehicle. In addition to these off-road enhancements, we performed a full front brake overhaul, replacing worn components to ensure the vehicle has reliable stopping power, which is critical both on and off the road.
Exterior and Interior Refinements
To give the Defender a finished look, we installed a series of exterior refinements, starting with OEM Land Rover decals and bonnet emblems that restore the vehicle’s authentic appearance. We added side body protectors and wing top protectors, not just for their visual appeal, but also to guard against potential damage during off-road excursions. Inside, we didn’t just focus on comfort but also on modernizing the vehicle’s functionality. We upgraded the cabin with a Navigation system, which offers a range of modern features, and integrated a rearview camera into the system, providing an essential safety upgrade. The custom sound system equipped with a brand new subwoofer and new gauges were added to enhance the driving experience. Lastly, we replaced all metal alloy hardware, both inside and out, to ensure every detail was not only aesthetically pleasing but also built to last.
This 1994 Land Rover Defender 110 project perfectly illustrates our approach at Legacy Overland—combining the timeless appeal of classic vehicles with modern upgrades that enhance functionality and reliability. Every modification and restoration detail was carefully considered to ensure that this Defender not only looks the part but is also ready to perform under any conditions, whether on the road or off the beaten path.
