We recently had the pleasure of acquiring a true gem - a 1981 Aston Martin V8 Vantage Series 4 Oscar India Sports Saloon that was originally ordered by the Sultan of Oman. With just 291 of these remarkable machines produced during seven and a half years of production, it's an incredibly rare and valuable addition to our workshop.
According to Aston Martin's factory build records, this V8 was built in mid-October of 1981 and delivered a month later. Of the 291 built, only 20 were delivered to the US from new. This particular example boasts a left-hand drive steering arrangement and was ordered with a specification that would make any enthusiast swoon.
The Sultan chose a Windemere Green finish with Magnolia leather upholstery and green piping. He also opted for the Vantage engine with Weber carburetors mated to a 5-speed manual transmission, power mirrors, detachable headrests, rear seat belts, badge bar, headlight washers and wipers, dual fog lamps, and twin gold waistlines with gold initials to the doors, hood, and trunk. It's clear that he spared no expense in making this Aston Martin an exceptional machine.
While this V8 was not the first of its kind, it marked a significant milestone in the Aston Martin story, particularly in America. Its powerful engine delivered 375 bhp, 375 lb-ft of torque, and a top speed of 170 mph. The V8 Vantage was faster and more powerful than any of its predecessors and quickly gained a reputation as a thrilling and luxurious sports car.
The swift coupe eventually left the Sultan's garage and was converted to an automatic transmission, making it a rare example indeed to have lost a pedal and two cogs since leaving the factory. It was later repainted in blue before being acquired by the current owner in Germany in 2009. Shortly after acquisition, it was repainted in pearlescent white. While the interior remains in rather original condition, a later stereo head unit appears to have been installed sometime in the late 1980s or early 1990s.
We feel privileged to have the opportunity to restore this Aston Martin to its original specifications. Our meticulous restoration process will begin with a detailed inspection of the engine, transmission, suspension, and other critical components, followed by a thorough cleaning and inspection of the bodywork.
At Legacy Motorworks, we pride ourselves on our ability to source hard-to-find parts and materials, ensuring that every aspect of the restoration is of the highest quality. We are true craftsmen who approach our work with the utmost care and respect for the heritage and traditions of classic car restoration.
This V8 Vantage is not just a beautiful machine, it's also an important piece of Aston Martin history. After mechanical recommissioning, it will be an impressive example of old-school craftsmanship and meticulous attention to detail. We look forward to bringing this exceptional machine back to its full glory and sharing it with Aston Martin enthusiasts everywhere.
